More Than a Swim: The Benefits of Swimming for Adults Receiving Care and Support

When we think about swimming, we often think about children learning an important life skill, keeping fit or enjoying a family trip to the pool. But swimming can offer so much more, particularly for adults receiving care and support.
For adults with additional needs, disabilities or reduced mobility, finding regular activities that are enjoyable, accessible and genuinely beneficial isn't always straightforward.
Swimming can tick a surprising number of those boxes.
At Grange Farm Swim School near Wisbech, we welcome adults receiving care and support for private swimming sessions, either alongside their carers or with additional qualified support from our team where required.
The benefits go far beyond exercise
Swimming is a fantastic form of whole-body exercise, but one of its biggest advantages is the support provided by the water itself.
The buoyancy of the water reduces the load placed on the body, which can make movement feel easier and more comfortable. For someone who finds some forms of exercise difficult, simply moving, stretching, walking or floating in the pool can provide an enjoyable way to be active.
It's also an activity that can be adapted to the individual. There doesn't have to be a goal of swimming lengths or learning a particular stroke.
Sometimes the benefit is simply being able to move, relax and enjoy the water.
Confidence, independence and a sense of achievement
The physical benefits are only part of the story.
Swimming can provide opportunities to develop confidence and independence too.
Something as simple as becoming comfortable in the water, floating with less assistance or learning a new skill can provide a real sense of achievement.
For adults who receive support with many aspects of everyday life, those moments of independence can be particularly valuable.
And progress doesn't have to mean becoming a stronger swimmer. Feeling happier entering the pool, trying something new or becoming more comfortable moving through the water are all achievements worth celebrating.
Time to switch off and enjoy the water
There is also something quite different about being in a swimming pool compared with many other organised activities.
It can simply be enjoyable.
Time in the water provides a change of environment and an opportunity to relax, have fun and spend time with carers, support workers or family members.
For some people, a regular swim can become an important part of their weekly routine and something they genuinely look forward to.
Why a private swimming pool can make a difference
A busy public swimming pool isn't the right environment for everyone.
Noise, crowds, unfamiliar people and lots of activity can sometimes make swimming more stressful than enjoyable, particularly for someone who becomes overwhelmed in busy environments.
Private pool hire offers a very different experience.
At Grange Farm, the pool can be enjoyed privately by the client and the people supporting them. This creates a calmer environment where there is more freedom to enjoy the session at an individual's own pace.
There is no pressure to keep up with anybody else and no expectation of what someone "should" be doing during their time in the pool.
What if carers aren't confident in the water?
This is something families and care providers may not immediately consider when looking at swimming as an activity.
Not every carer is a confident swimmer. Some may not be able to enter the pool with the person they support, while others may work for an organisation that requires additional qualified supervision.
That's why we offer two different options at Grange Farm Swim School.
Our private pool hire is suitable when carers or family members are able to provide the support required during the session.
Alternatively, we can arrange a staffed session with a member of our team who holds an appropriate lifeguard or swim rescue qualification. These sessions are arranged directly with our administration team so that we can coordinate the right member of staff being available.
Many of these become regular weekly sessions, giving clients a familiar activity and routine.
Carers aren't charged to attend
We also don't charge additional fees for the carers accompanying a social care client.
If one client needs two or three carers with them, for example, those carers can attend without increasing the session price.
For staffed sessions, the current cost is £39 including VAT for one client for one hour, or £45 including VAT for two or more clients.
Private pool hire can be booked separately online, and we're also happy to work with care organisations where different payment arrangements are needed, including arranging a series of payments in advance and providing receipts.
Could swimming become part of someone's weekly routine?
For families, support workers and care organisations, swimming is worth considering as more than an occasional day out.
A regular session can combine movement, wellbeing, social interaction, confidence and enjoyment in one activity.
Most importantly, it can be shaped around the person.
Grange Farm Swim School is based near Wisbech and is well placed for families and care providers travelling from March, King's Lynn, Downham Market and the surrounding areas.
